It is native to western North America, particularly in coniferous forests.

The Pinemat is a spreading shrub that forms a mat, or carpet, of flowers about 243 centimetres (96 inches) wide and 15 centimetres (6 inches) tall.

It has evergreen leaves and small clusters of deep blue or purple flowers. The fruit is a small, wrinkled capsule.

It blooms in winter and spring.

Photographed in the Botanical Garden, Paris, May 2021.
