Mimosa – ‘Le Gaulois’

The Mimosa (Acacia dealbata – ‘Le Gaulois‘) is an evergreen, flowering tree in the Fabaceae family of legumes. It is also known as the Acacia, Blue Wattle, or Silver Wattle. The Le Gaulois (The Gaul) is a French cultivar.

It is native to southern Australia.

It grows to 5-20 metres (16-65 feet) tall.

The leaves are bue-green to silvery-grey, about 1-12 centimetres (up to 5 inches) long and 1-11 centimetres (up to 4 inches) wide, with 6-30 pairs of pinnae.

The flowers form large racemose inflorescences of 13-42 bright yellow globules (small balls).

The fruit is a flattened, thin pod about 2-12 centimetres (1-5 inches) long, containing several seeds.

The Mimosa blooms from January to March.

Photographed at the Paris Botanical Garden, France, February 2023.
