American Colombo
The American Colombo (Frasera caroliniensis) is a flowering, herbaceous, perennial plant in the Gentianaceae family. It is also known as the American Calumba, Yellow Gentian, Meadowpride, Pyramid-Flower, Indian Lettuce, and Ground-Century.
It is native to eastern and south-eastern North America.
It is monocarpic as it flowers once after multiple seasons (up to 30 years), then dies.
It grows to about 200 centimetres (78 inches) tall.
Its leaves are 7-15 centimetres (3-6 inches) long on a round, elongated stem.
The American Colombo has approximately 50-100 flowers in a panicle, each about 2.5 centimetres (one inch) in diameter. The flowers are green to yellow with purple speckles.
The seed capsule is brown and about one centimetre (half an inch) long.
