Common Marigold

The Common Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is an aromatic, herbaceous, perennial flowering plant in the Asteraceae family of daisies. Althoough perennial, it is often treated as an annual, especially in colder regions. It is also known as Pot Marigold, Ruddies, Mary’s Gold, and Scotch Marigold.

It is thought to be native to southern Europe.

It grows to 80 centimetres (31 inches) tall with sparsely branched stems. Its leaves are 5-17 centimetres (2-7 inches) long and hairy on the upper and lower sides.

The flowerheads are yellow and 4-7 centimetres (2-3 inches) in diameter. They are surrounded by two rows of hairy bracts. They have a single ring of orange-yellow ray florets around the central disc.

The fruit is a thorny, curved achene.

The Common Marigold blooms all year long if conditions are suitable.
