Climbing Bean ‘Giant of Stuttgart’
The Climbing Bean ‘Giant of Stuttgart’ (Phaseolus coccineus) is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family of legumes – peas and beans. It is also known as Runner Bean, Butter Bean, and Multiflora Bean.
The Climbing Bean is native to Central America, but the ‘Giant of Stuttgart’ variety was cultivated in Stuttgart, Germany.
It is a vine that grows up to 3 metres (10 feet) tall and 15 centimetres (6 inches) wide.
It has tuberous roots and large, deeply-veined leaves.
The ‘Giant of Stuttgart’ is an abundant producer with long, straight, flattened, stringless, light-green beans (pods), growing to about 30 centimetres (12 inches) long.
It takes up to 56 days to mature. Inside the pods are small seeds, often also referred to as beans, which are 2.5 centimetres (one inch) long.
Most varieties have red flowers, with some having white flowers.
