Common Maidenhair Fern

The Common Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum aethiopicum) is a non-flowering plant in the Pteridaceae family of ferns. Some botanists place it in the Adiantaceae family.

It is widespread across moist areas of Africa, Australia, Norfolk Island, and New Zealand, such as creeks and waterfalls in tropical forests.

It is 10-45 centimetres (4-18 inches) tall.

It grows in spreading clumps of fronds with rhizomes. The bright-green fronds (leaves) are horizontal and layered, divided into two or three with many small wedge-shaped segments.

Photographed in Adelaide, Australia, June 2023.
