Dyer’s Knotweed
The Dyer’s Knotweed (Persicaria tinctoria) is a flowering perennial plant in the Polygonaceae family of buckwheat. It is also known as Chinese Indigo or Japanese Indigo.
It is native to eastern Europe and Asia.
It can grow to 90 centimetres (3 feet) tall, and is a fast spreading plant. It grows from rhizomes and is known as an invasive species.
It has dense purple-red canes that grow from pinkish buds, with leaves along their length. Its leaves were used as a source of indigo dye that produce deep blue colours.
The upright pointing flowers come in a variety of colours from cream to bright red. The Persicaria tinctoria has long, cream-coloured flower tassel.
The Dyer’s Knotweed blooms in summer and into autumn.
